NEWARK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT - NEC CONNECTION

Over a 9 month period between late 1999 and 2000, Blastech processed over 450,000 square feet of steel fabricated by Canron Construction Corp. East. This project is an extension to the existing people mover system that moves people from a train station to the Newark, New Jersey airport. The work consisted of processing 2 miles of box girders, 2.5' w x 4' h and upwards to 153' in length along with supporting columns. On the interior of the girders and columns, we abrasive cleaned in accordance with SSPC-SP10 followed by the application of pure zinc alloy metallizing. An epoxy seal coat was then applied. In addition to the metallizing process, we also installed tubing and insulation on the underside of the top flange of the girders, which will contain cable used to heat the flange. This will ensure that ice does not build up.
On the exterior surfaces, we abrasive cleaned to the same specification and applied a 3 coat organic zinc/epoxy/polyurethane system to all surfaces except the top flange of the girders. Here we applied the organic zinc followed by the application of a durable, non-slip high build epoxy surfacing designed to give long term traction for the cars.
This project demanded the highest of quality and inspection documentation and Blastech was equal to the challenge.
